Why's And Wherefores

For many years, Mandy and I have shared a mutual love of documentaries. We've gotten to the point where, (unless it's a movie) the only programming we have on when the television is on is educational programming, and more to the point, documentaries. (Where she finds a near continuous supply of them continues to boggle the mind.) We'll also watch entertaining educational programs (let's use Mythbusters as an example) a good portion of the time as well, but mostly it's straight up documentaries and documentary series. This has led to us having an encyclopedic knowledge on a wide range of topics (like the known sciences) but also many other niche interests that many would find "mundane," or even 'boring." In our quest to continually play educational programs, we have found that the more narrow a documentary is in scope, the more interesting it usually is. Sure, The History Of Four-Poster Beds may sound like a real snooze-fest, but more often than not we find ourselves amazed at just how many ways the invention of four-poster bed touches our interests in some way, or has a hidden relevance to our lives, or just contains fascinating stories about people of whom you may or may not have heard.

The other thing that nearly-continuous documentary viewing has done for us is to spur a nigh-compulsive need to share our knowledge with others when they begin talking about a topic that we've seen covered well. "Oh, you absolutely must see this documentary we watched the other day on the making of French bread!" is not an unusual thing to hear leaping from our lips, but that's where things get tricky... I probably don't remember the title properly, and Erin knows who the presenter is but not how it came to be in our library list; now, this may be fortunate for someone who is really hungy and would rather not shift the discussions from food to documentaries, but there are certainly times and places when I've wanted a central site to which I can direct my listeners; if we've already covered the documentary in question, great, but even if not there will always be a place for suggestions in both our hearts and our blogs.

So in the interest of getting some of these documentaries out of the shadows and into your living rooms and minds, we're starting this blog... but this is no ordinary blog; this blog awaits you with Big, Pointy Teeth!

Sure we're going to do write-ups of the documentaries we watch, have periodic summaries of what you might've missed recently or what's coming soon, put together some topical overviews, and maybe even slip in an amusing picture, list or video when we're feeling a bit silly. However, we intend to take this so much farther than that. We're planning to use our combined talents for more than just reviews of documentaries. We can practically guarantee you that we'll eventually try our hand at video reviews. Erin's presence guarantees an artistic flair. We want to take you all with us when we take field trips to museums and other places of historical interest. Interpretive dances. (Okay, Erin is definitely out for interpretive dance; Mandy is always willing to play things by ear ) And eventually of course, we'll be making our own documentary content (possibly about four-poster beds, but no promises) brought to you with our keen, snarky observation, quirky personalities and loveable faces. (At least we've been told that something about mothers loving our faces, and surely some of our readers must be mothers...)

And so, this is where we currently find ourselves. Just two small seeds of creativity and knowledge, seeking a place to go into a multi-media empire based on our mutual love of expanding our knowledge base and, even more excitingly, your knowledge base... and having a damned good time doing it too!

Of course, this all hinges upon YOU, the reader. We can make all the things all we want, but if we don't find an audience... well, then we'll probably keep doing it, but just not like you all that much anymore. Honestly though, we'd rather just get some feedback from y'all... what you like, what you don't like, what you'd like to see more, what you'd like to see less. Otherwise, we're just stuck with the assumption that you love watching everything as much as we'regoing to have creating said content.

With all that said, Welcome to "Watchin' the Detectives!"
(They're sooo cute!)
